September 27, 2009 – A rainy day of exploration

As forecast, the day was filled with showers. We heard it raining in the early morning hours. And, because of the forecast and the long drive the day before, we really didn’t make any plans.

At breakfast, we joined Jack and Cheryl for waffles and coffee. The maple syrup is Jack’s own; more on that latter. We then spent some time with house cleaning and mail. Jack asked if we would like to take a walk in the woods. Why not.

Jack and Cheryl have worked to first of all, acquire acreage and then to maintain it with some trails for there use. Cheryl uses the trails with her horses, while Jack enjoys them in winter with a snowmobile. While we walked the property, Jack described some of the problems trying to keep the growth under control. Jack lumbers some of the hardwoods for winter firewood. These are trees that are not suitable for other uses. Our walk eventually led us to Jack’s sugar shack. No, not that type of sugar shack, this is Jack boils down the maple sap into maple syrup. It is quite an operation. Once the sap begins to run, it is a fairly constant job of collecting, preheating and boiling to reduce the sap to syrup.

Back at the barn, Cheryl introduced us to her horses. We also met Sprocket the goat. The barn, like the house, was built in the early 1800’s. Jack went over the construction of the barn describing how different sections were initially used.

After the tour, we were off to Wolfeborough for lunch. Wolfeborough is a small town on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. We lunched at a restaurant which sits bayside overlooking the harbor. After lunch, Jack gave us a driving tour of the local area.

We finished the day with good food, good wine and great conversation around Jack and Cheryl’s table. All in all, a wonderful day.
