September 28, 2009 – A short walk

Leaving Enfield, we proceeded toward Canaan and on toward Mt. Cardigan. Jack had loaned us a book on hikes to take with your dog. I had chosen the climb to the summit of Mt. Cardigan. Advertised as one of the most popular hikes in N.H., we didn’t know quite what to expect. But it is mid-week at the end of September so it shouldn’t be crowded. Pleasantly enough, it wasn’t crowded at all. When we reached the trail head, there was a couple who had just returned from the hike and no one else.

As the hike begins, it climbs primarily through hard woods. A little further along the trail, the hard woods give way to white pine and spruce. Soon enough, the trees dwindle away to reveal a bald, granite summit with a fire tower. It was a fairly easy walk of a mile and a half. The views from the top were really nice. We had some rain so it was a bit hazy. The tree color came through as a muted pallet of reds, oranges, gold and green. It was not a dramatic as it might have been in full sun, but quite impressive just the same.
